The New Zealand Black Ferns women have lost the opening rugby Test to England at Twickenham, the hosts drawing first blood in the three-match series with a 10-0 win.

England flanker Margaret Alphonsi scored the only try of the game in the 29th minute which was converted for a 7-0 half-time lead, and captain Katy McLean slotted a drop kick in the only score of the second half.

The four-time Women's Rugby World Cup winners looked rusty and England out-muscled the Black Ferns in their first clash since they beat the English in the 2010 Cup final.

The two sides square off again in two days in Surrey then again next weekend at the same Esher RFC ground.
