Torckler, Boyd take out Taupo Challenge

PureBlack Racing rider Michael Torckler won the Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge while Waiuku's Kaytee Boyd took out the elite women's race.

Strong winds made for a tough 160-kilometre race, with over half of the men's field being dropped in the first 10 kilometres.

Torckler attacked up the tough Hautepe Hill to overhaul Wellington's Joseph Cooper, crossing the line over two and a half minutes ahead of PureBlack team-mate Mike Northey, with Cooper third.

Boyd flew in to Taupo after competing in the Oceania Track Championships in Invercargill to out-sprint rivals Sonia Waddell of Cambridge and Auckland's Mel Burke for the victory.
