Bodysuit debacle could plague swimming again

6:48 pm on 30 November 2011

The bodysuit war which reduced the 2009 swimming world champs to farce and effectively turned the sport into a battle of technology could erupt again, when American Michael Phelps launches a new outfit for next year's London Olympics.

The 14 time Olympic gold medallist was opposed to the now-banned swimsuits that were used in Rome two years ago and refused to wear them as he believed they aided buoyancy.

More than 40 world records were set during the Rome champs leading to the sport's world governing body FINA banning them and placing a limit on technology.

However, with the start of the London Olympics less than eight months away, Phelps is to unveil Speedo's latest suit which it claims will produce a flood of world records at the Games.
