The Brazilian footballer Socrates, regarded as the leading player of his generation, alongside Zico, has died of organ damage, aged 57.

Socrates died after being admitted to hospital for the third time since August with liver and intestinal problems.

Socrates, who led Brazil at the 82 and 86 World Cups, had practised medicine and worked as a soccer pundit since retiring as a player, and he acknowledged in September that alcohol was the main cause of his disease.
