Otago Volts lead The Ford Trophy after two rounds

10:14 am on 5 December 2011

In just his third domestic one-day outing the 21-year-old all-rounder Jimmy Neesham made an impression with both bat and ball as the Otago Volts got home by six runs against the Wellington Firebirds in a match reduced to 40 overs per side following morning rain.

Neesham led the rearguard action with a fine 55 off only 51 balls at the Basin Reserve, including seven fours and one six before turning around with the ball to claim five for 44.

Rain frustrated the Auckland Aces and Central Stags, whose Ford Trophy one-day match was washed out in Auckland.

Weather also intervened at at Mt Maunganui, forcing the Canterbury Wizards and Northern Knights to put their feet up instead of kicking on for a potential Ford Trophy one-day win.

So Otago lead the competition after two rounds with Auckland, Central and Canterbury tied for second while Wellington lie at the foot of the table.
