Gill reaches qualifying mark for London

6:01 am on 6 December 2011

The 16 year old Auckland shot putter Jacko Gill is on course to become one of New Zealand's youngest Olympians after reaching the qualifying mark on the North Shore last night.

Gill threw 20.38 metres, a national record, to surpass the London Olympic Games qualifying mark ny 8 centimetres.

The mark is also a new World's best for athletes aged 16 and 17.

Gill was too young to compete at this year's World champs in Korea but last night's performance, would have qualified him for the final and placed him 8th overall.

Over the next 2 weeks Gill intends to take a crack at a couple of age group world records with lighter shots before he turns 17.
