Both Manchester teams out of Champions League

2:08 pm on 8 December 2011

Both Manchester football teams have been eliminated from the European Champions League.

Last season's beaten finalists, Manchester United needed a point from their trip to Switzerland to progress to the knock-out stage, but were beaten 2-1 by Basel.

It was only the third time in 17 Champions League campaigns that United had failed to get past the group stage.

Benfica and Basel qualified from the group.

Meanwhile Manchester City beat already qualified Bayern Munich 2-nil, but were pipped for second place in the group by Napoli.

The other qualifiers are Inter Milan, CSKA Moscow, Real Madrid and Lyon.

The draw for the last 16 knockout stage will be made next week.
