Black Caps pinning hopes on first session madness

6:30 am on 12 December 2011

Replays of Phil Hughes' lucky let-off proved hard to watch for New Zealand but they will turn to more enjoyable footage to keep hopes of a rare Test cricket upset over Australia alive in Hobart.

The Black Caps were kicking themselves for not reviewing a caught behind shout after discovering hot spot technology showed that Hughes gloved a Chris Martin delivery before he had scored.

Instead of extending his horror run, the fortunate Hughes (20 not out off 64 balls) kept his faint Test dream alive.

Hughes and David Warner (a Test-best 47 not out off 50 balls) will resume at 0-72 chasing 241 for victory after rain washed out Sunday's final session.

While the Hughes' replay hurt, the Black Caps bowling coach Damien Wright says they'll soak up much more pleasant viewing before day four - highlights of their first innings rout of Australia for 136.

A total of 19 wickets have fallen in the first sessions in the first three days of the second Test - and Wright's confident that trend will continue.
