Volvo boats about to round tip of Africa

6:05 am on 13 December 2011

The skippers on the Volvo Ocean race will have to make a decision shortly how to round the tip of Africa on the second leg from Cape Town to Abu Dhabi.

Frustrated by light winds and adverse currents on the opening night, the six-boat fleet will soon face the critical choice between a southerly or easterly route around the bottom of the continent.

the French boat Groupama leads Team New Zealand's Camper by 1.6 miles.

The fleet will not sail all the way to Abu Dhabi, they'll be picked up by a freighter to avoid the pirates of Somalia, before racing the last day into the UAE.
