Team sanya needs repairs again

6:00 am on 20 December 2011

The Chinese boat Team Sanya has been forced to sacrifice their lead on the second leg of the Volvo Ocean Race from Cape Town to Abu Dhabi and detour west to Madagascar for emergency repairs.

Their New Zealand skipper Mike Sanderson and his crew are sailing cautiously to Madagascar where they will assess options to repair their rigging, which was damaged yesterday.

Sanderson says it was fortunate that a crew member spotted the broken rigging cable shortly before a planned tack.

It's another setback for Team Sanya who were forced to retire from the first leg because of damage.

Team New Zealand's boat Camper has now taken over the lead just ahead of Telefonica of Spain.
