The young English golfer Tom Lewis, who led the British Open as an amateur earlier this year, has been named the European Tour's rookie of the year.

20 year old Lewis shot a 65 on the first day of the Open championship at Sandwich in July, but it was his win as a new professional at the Portugal Masters in October that sealed his European Tour award.

It was only his third start as a professional, and he won the title with a scintillating round of 65.

It took Tiger Woods five tournaments to land his first professional title.
