Golfers top British honours

British golfers Rory McIlroy and Darren Clarke capped an outstanding year when they were recognised in Britain's New Year Honours List.

22-year-old McIlroy will have an MBE to show for his efforts after throwing away victory at the U.S. Masters in April and then clinching his first major trophy at the U.S. Open in June.

Clarke will receive an OBE after landing his first major in the British Open at Sandwich in July.

Rugby players Chris Patterson of Scotland and Martyn Williams of Wales, former cricket umpire Dickie Bird, former Formula 1 driver Nigel Mansell and rugby league player Jamie Peacock were also honoured.
