Central defender Ben Sigmund capped another outstanding performance with his second goal of the A-League football season as the Wellington Phoenix beat Sydney FC 4-2 at Westpac Stadium.

Sigmund's powerful 78th minute header was vital after Bruno Cazarine had got Sydney back on level terms at 2-2, giving the Phoenix the momentum they needed with the home side scoring two more late goals to put the game beyond doubt.

Daniel, Dani Sanchez and returning striker Paul Ifill were the other goalscorers for the Ricki Herbert coached side.

The result moves the Phoenix into fourth place on the A-league ladder, leapfrogging Sydney in the process.

In yesterday's other matches Adelaide United outgunned the Melbourne Heart 3-1 at AAMI Park, the Newcastle Jets edged Gold Coast 3-2 at Ausgrid Stadium, the Central Coast Mariners beat the Melbourne Victory 2-nil at Bluetongue Stadium and the Perth Glory and Brisbane Roar fought out a 2-all draw in Perth.
