The third-seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga used his Qatar Tennis Open second-round clash with Italian outsider Flavio Cipolla as a chance to experiment with serve and volley and the tactic worked well enough to earn the Frenchman a 7-6 6-3 victory.
Tsonga, whose new year's ambition is to break up the big four who dominate the rankings, revealed one of the weapons which may help him do it as he reached the quarter-finals in Doha.
The French world No.6 from came to the net more frequently and effectively than usual as he overcame the surprisingly persistent resistance of Cipolla, the world No.74 from Italy.
Tsonga says he has to find some new things to compete against the big four, referring to Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray.
