France reach Hopman Cup final

6:38 am on 6 January 2012

France have secured a spot in Hopman Cup tennis final for just the second time in their history after dispatching Spain in Perth.

The women's world No.9 Marion Bartoli defeated Spain's Anabel Medina Garrigues 6-2 6-4 in the women's singles, before Richard Gasquet gave unbeaten France an unassailable 2-0 lead in the tie with a 6-2 6-4 triumph over Fernando Verdasco.

With France 2-0 up in the tie, the dead rubber mixed doubles was not played.

France last reached the final in 1998, when they were defeated by the Slovak Republic.

The unbeaten Czech Republic team of Tomas Berdych and women's world No.2 Petra Kvitova are the frontrunners to meet Gasquet and Bartoli in Saturday's final.
