The seventh seed Young won the first four games and then the first set but the way it ended 6-4 showed how much trouble the former junior world number one was starting to have from Falla, and he went on to lose the next two 3-6 3-6.

The other notable result on day one of the Auckland tournament was Brazil's Thomas Belluci beating Rui Machado of Portugal in straight sets, 6-3 7-6.
