The Manchester United football striker Wayne Rooney has denied accusations from the Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini that he influenced the sending off of City captain, Vincent Kompany, in yesterday's FA Cup third round tie at Eastlands.

Rooney scored twice in United's 3-2 win but Mancini felt the England striker played a big part in the referee's decision to show Kompany a red card after 12 minutes into the game.

Rooney has defended himself and says it was a clear red card for a two footed tackle.

Mancini feels the four game suspension for Kompany that will follow, pending an appeal, will have a significant impact on his team.
