Ferrer not completely in dark after day of underdog wins

12:44 pm on 11 January 2012

Tuesday was the underdog's day at the Auckland men's tennis Open, with two French qualifiers upsetting much more fancied opponents in the first round.

Adrian Mannarino opened play by sending fifth seed Kevin Anderson of South Africa packing in straight sets.

Then in the night match Benoit Paire - another French qualifier - knocked out Spain's former world number one Juan Carlos Ferrero - 6-3 6-2, in exactly one hour.

Rising star Ryan Harrison won the battle of the American wildcards, seeing off Sam Querrey 6-4 6-3, while former champion Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany was pushed to three sets by Swiss Stephane Bohli.

Today the big names are finally in action after being given a bye into the second round with top seeded Spaniard David Ferrer squaring off against Lukas Rosol of the Czech Republic.

The defending champion Ferrer says he knows a little about the 26-year-old, but not much.

The first match on centre court pit's eighth seed Kohlschreiber against wildcard Harrison at 1 o'clock.
