Kohlschreiber beats Harrison to reach Heineken quarters

Former champion Phillip Kohlschreiber of Germany has made the quarter-finals at the Heineken tennis Open in Auckland with a three-set victory over American teenager Ryan Harrison.

Kohlschreiber had only failed to make the quarters once in his seven previous visits to Stanley Street and broke Harrison's first serve in all three sets.

But it was the 19-year-old who took the first set 6-4, with two breaks to one.

Kohlschreiber won the second set by the same scoreline with the only break, and went out to 4-1 up in the third with two more breaks over the younger man.

Harrison smashed his racket after that first break and looked increasingly frustrated - but the mercurial rookie found some form to break back for 4-2.

He fought off one match point on his own serve but double faulted on the second to hand Kohlschreiber the match, 4-6 6-4 6-3 in just under two hours.

Earlier Alejandro Falla of Colombia became the first player into the quarter-finals with a straight sets victory over Italy's Potito Starace.
