Big guns advance at the national surf champs at Piha

New Zealand's top three interionally ranked surfers have all progressed after their heats on day three of the national surfing championships at Piha.

Gisborne's Richard Christie, ranked 43 in the world and Raglan's Billy Stairmand, ranked 79th, drew each other in the first heat but both advanced with Christie edging Stairmand.

Gisborne's Jay Quinn also won his heat in impressive form.

Of the locally-based New Zealand surfers, Gisborne's Bobby Hansen has won three heats to move into the quarter-finals.
