Stairmand, Durham-Tipene take out Piha nationals

Raglan surfer Billy Stairmand has won his second national Open Men's title at the 2012 Championships at Piha, near Auckland.

Stairmand's impeccable backhand surfing gave him the edge on the lefthanders of Piha Bar.

The 22-year-old is ranked 79th in the world and New Zealand's third highest ranked surfer internationally, and is one of but a few in the world who managed to claim a victory over 11 times world champion Kelly Slater in 2011.

Thandi Durham-Tipene claimed her first Open Women's title in style with her last wave, jumping from third to first in the dying seconds of the final.

The Taranaki surfer says it's one of her biggest goals she's ever achieved.
