Nadal rises to occasion in tough quarter-final

A fired-up Rafael Nadal survived a huge scare from big-hitting Czech Tomas Berdych at the Australian Open before prevailing in four sets to set up a mouth-watering semi-final with great rival Roger Federer.

A set down and facing set point in the second, Nadal dug himself out of a cavernous hole then roared to a 6-7 7-6 6-4 6-3 victory after a gruelling four-hour tussle under lights.

The world number two was desperate to reach the semi-finals at the year's first grand slam and Nadal was happy with his fighting performance in Melbourne.

Nadal's last meeting with Federer at Melbourne Park was in the 2009 final, when he upset the four times champion in a five-set classic.
