Capello quits England football team

Fabio Capello has resigned as England football manager.

The Italian coach's resignation came after he met with FA chairman David Bernstein to discuss the ruling body's decision to remove the England captaincy from defender John Terry until he stands trial in July for racially abusing an opponent.

An FA statement says Capello will leave the post of England Manager with immediate effect.

Capello disagreed with the FA's decision to strip Terry of the captaincy and spoke out in an interview on Italian television earlier this week.

England under-21 head coach Stuart Pearce will take control for a friendly at the end of the month, while Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp is favoured to take them to Euro 2012 in June.
