Manchester United's 38-year-old midfielder Ryan Giggs has signed a one-year extension to his contract with the Premier League football club.

Giggs, who made his United debut in March 1991, has made a club record 898 appearances, scoring 162 goals.

The former Wales international has won 12 Premier League titles, four FA Cups, three League Cups and two Champions League winners medals.

Meanwhile United midfielder Tom Cleverley will return to action for the first time since October when the champions host bitter rivals Liverpool this weekend.

The 22-year-old, who made an explosive start to the season with his energy and ball distribution, has been sidelined with a foot injury since the 1-0 win at Everton in late October.

United will jump above Manchester City at the top of the table if they win at Old Trafford in Sunday's game, at least until their neighbours travel to Aston Villa on Monday.

City are two points clear with 57 points from 24 games, with United on 55 and third-placed Tottenham Hotspur on 50.
