Gold Coast all but topple Mariners

Strife-torn Gold Coast United almost pulled off the upset of the A-League football season before one of the smallest crowds in the league's history Wednesday night at Skilled Park.

Gold Coast led the Central Coast Mariners 3-1 in the second half before the competition leaders saved face with two goals to salvage a 3-3 draw and stay six points clear on top of the table.

The Mariners coach Graham Arnold said he couldn't give Gold Coast a big enough rap, adding that it would have been a "crime" had Gold Coast not got something from their performance, which was watched by only 1141 fans.
