Proteas go 1-0 up in ODI series

12:23 pm on 26 February 2012

South Africa has won the opening one day international cricket match against New Zealand by six wickets in Wellington.

Batting first the Black Caps made 253, with Brendon McCullum and Kane Williamson reaching half centuries.

It appeared a good enough total when South Africa were 35 for three but the Proteas chased down the remaining 219 runs for the loss of just one wicket and four overs to spare with captain A B de Villiers making an unbeaten century.

De Villiers finished 106 not out while Faf Du Plessis was 66 not out.

The second ODI in the three-match series is on Wednesday at Napier's McLean Park.
