Differing fortunes for New Zealand Super Rugby sides

The New Zealand Super Rugby sides emerged from the opening round with vastly different fortunes after an exciting weekend of rugby throughout the competition.

The Crusaders edged the Blues in a nail-biter at Eden Park in the season opener on Friday night before the Highlanders pipped the Chiefs in a gritty display in Hamilton on Saturday.

However the loss was of least concern for the Chiefs new coach Dave Rennie with the side suffering five serious injuries to front-line players including both starting props, halfback Brendon Leonard and star wing Lelia Masaga.

A young and inexperienced Hurricanes side gave it their all in Cape Town but were ultimately let down by indiscipline with the Stormers capitalising on the Canes three yellow cards, all to props, to leave Mark Hammett's men as the only team without a point from round one.
