24 speed record could fall on Volvo Ocean race

6:08 am on 29 February 2012

The 24-hour speed distance record is under threat as the Volvo Ocean race fleet heads south towards New Zealand doing 30 knots.

Team New Zealand's boat Camper set a mark of just over 554 nautical miles on the first leg.

Organisers say the weather conditions for the next 3 days in the Pacfic could result in the record falling.

Groupama has a 60 mile lead over Camper at the head of the fleet.
