Govt poised to proceed on road partnership project

The Government has received advice that a Public Private Partnership is the preferable way to fund the construction of New Zealand's largest ever roading project.

The Waterview Connection is a key part of Auckland's Western Ring Route, and initial estimates put the cost of a tunnel at about $2 billion.

The Government would like to see the project completed by 2015.

A steering group has found a Public Private Partnership could deliver better value for money than conventional procurement.

The group was comprised of government officials and business representatives, and was tasked with assessing the feasibility of a joint partnership.

Transport Minister Annette King says Waterview Connection could well be New Zealand's first such partnership, and could provide a blueprint for other major projects.

She says further work will be undertaken before any final decision is made.
