Quake shakes central North Island

3:12 pm on 1 September 2008

An earthquake hit south of Taupo on Monday measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale, according to seismologists.

Geological and Nuclear Sciences says the earthquake struck about 1.31pm and was 80km deep.

It was centred 10km southwest of Turangi and was felt as far away as Napier and Wellington.

The quake was almost the same strength as one which struck just south of Hastings a week ago.
