Gap between National and Labour narrows in poll

Updated at 9:46am on 5 September 2008

The Labour Party is continuing to close the gap on the National Party in the latest poll, with National's lead now its smallest in about a year.

In the latest Roy Morgan opinion poll National scored 44.5% support and Labour 38%.

The Green party had 8% support, the only minor part to score above 5%.

New Zealand First, in the midst of a controversy over donations, saw its support drop from 6.5% to 2.5%.

The poll of 841 people was conducted between 18 August and 31 August.

Radio New Zealand's political editor says the poll continues a trend in a series of surveys last month, which showed the gap between the two major parties is narrowing.
