Police dogs close by for hospital patrols

7:36 am on 7 September 2008

Police dog handlers are patrolling the emergency department at Christchurch Hospital at weekends.

Superintendent Dave Cliff says they target times when there is an increase in alcohol-affected patients.

The dogs do not go into the hospital but Superintendent Cliff says their presence in police vehicles, combined with the patrols, makes a difference to the behaviour of some inebriated patients.
