South Canterbury parents are being urged not to panic over an increase in head lice cases.

South Canterbury parents are being urged not to panic over an increase in head lice cases.

The District Health Board is also warning them to stay clear of dangerous home remedies, such as the use of flea products or flyspray.

A spokesperson, Judy Cooper, says head lice need to be treated to avoid children scratching themselves and causing a secondary infection through broken skin.

But she says some of the things people do to get rid of them are more harmful than the lice themselves.

She says head lice can be treated effectively using a prescription medicine or conditioning treatment.
