A former Master of the Bells at First Church in Dunedin has been sentenced to a term of seven-and-a-half years in prison for sexual offending in the 1980s.

David Hockley, 68, earlier pleaded guilty at the High Court in Dunedin to five charges representing repeated and prolonged offending against a young girl.

Hockley first raped her when she was aged 13 - the day before she started high school. Over the next five years, he subjected her to regular indecencies, as often as six times a week.

Hockley abused the girl at First Church when taking her for bellringing lessons, as well as in his car, house and workplaces. He also made her watch pornography featuring bestiality.

The victim, now aged 37, underwent years of counselling and complained to police last year.

In sentencing Hockley on Friday, Justice French said the harm he had done was incalculable.
