6:17 pm on 18 October 2008

The police are appealing for help in identifying a man who was killed by a freight train at Raumati north of Wellington early on Saturday morning.

The victim is described as Caucasian, of slim to medium build and 1.8 metres tall, with medium length curly brown hair and one to two weeks facial growth.

The man, thought to be in his 20s, was walking along the tracks near the Raumati Road intersection with State Highway 1 at about 1am.

The drivers of the northbound train were unable to stop in time to avoid him. Emergency services were called but the man died at the scene.

Four die on roads

Four people have died on the roads on Saturday.

Two 17-year-old men were found dead at Waikuku in North Canterbury. The police say their four-wheel drive vehicle appears to have hit a bank and overturned.

In south Waikato, a head-on crash between two vehicles claimed the lives of both drivers on State Highway 1 north of Tokoroa.
