Healthcare Providers hits out at reaction to rest home report

The organisation that represents New Zealand rest homes says the response to reports of mistreatment at an Auckland rest home is an over-reaction.

Belhaven rest home was closed in July after it was revealed an elderly woman's mouth had been taped shut.

Healthcare Providers New Zealand says these incidents are isolated and are not a fair representation of all rest homes in the country.

Its Chief Executive Martin Taylor says he accepts that spot audits and public disclosure of audit reports are good ideas to increase consumer confidence.

But he says calls to regulate the industry are an overaction.

Meanwhile, the National Party says it's obtained a previously secret Health Ministry report about a 72-year-old man being locked out of the home in March last year for calling out at night.
