The veteran American broadcaster, Studds Terkel, has died at his home in Chicago at the age of 96.
For four decades, Studs Terkel entertained listeners on his Chicago-based radio show.
But he was best known for his books which he called oral histories.
They sought to convey subjects such as the depression, and race relations, through the words of ordinary Americans describing their experiences.
He won a Pulitzer prize in 1985 for his chronicling of World War 2 in his history, The Good War.
Born in 1912 in New York to Russian Jewish parents, Terkel moved with his parents to Chicago, Illinois, eight years later where he spent most of his life.
