Debris from a missing helicopter has been found in the south-eastern end of Lake Wanaka.

The Robinson R22 piloted by Morgan Saxton was reported overdue just after 8pm on Saturday.

The helicopter is believed to have gone into the south-eastern part of the lake around Mou Waho Island while on a flight to Wanaka.

Searchers are yet to find the wreckage and the 31-year-old Haast man, but debris and other items have been found near the island.

Rescue Coordination Centre spokesperson Mike Roberts says a search by a night-vision-equipped helicopter on Saturday located a pilot's helmet, flight jacket and gear bag, floating just north of the island about 8.15pm.

He says further items, including a floor mat, first aid kit and helicopter seat-back had been found on the eastern shoreline of the lake north of the first batch of debris at 8.35am on Sunday.

Mr Roberts says an oil slick has also been seen in the area.

Nine vessels, three land based search teams and two helicopters searched an area around Mou Waho Island on Sunday.

The Civil Aviation Authority has launched an investigation into the crash and spokesperson Bill Sommer says two of their safety investigators have been sent to Wanaka.

In June, Morgan Saxton and his father were released from prison on bail, pending an appeal against their convictions for stealing Ngai Tahu greenstone in south Westland.
