Deadline issued for improved rugby budget

12:20 pm on 4 November 2008

Marlborough rugby clubs have told the Tasman Makos to produce an improved budget within a fortnight or they will withdraw from the union.

The clubs on Monday night set a deadline of 17 November for Tasman to substantially reduce a projected shortfall for next season of $640,000.

Marlborough sub-union chairman Peter Heagney says the whole deficit does not have to be covered, but a more viable budget will be required.

He says Marlborough clubs need to know soon if the amalgamated union is to continue if they are to play in the Heartland rugby division next season.

Tasman chairman Nick Patterson says the deadline will be hard to meet.

He says Nelson sponsors have got behind the Makos and now Marlborough businesses need to put their hands up.
