Rising star Juan Martin del Potro and former champion David Ferrer are confirmed starters for January's Heineken Tennis Open in Auckland.

Argentinian del Potro, 20, is ranked No. 8 in the world and will be the tournament's top ranked player.

He has four singles titles to his credit and reached the quarter finals of the US Open where he was beaten by Scotsman Andy Murray.

He's played at the tournament once before, as an 18 year old losing in the first round.

Ferrer, the world No. 12, reached the quarter finals at this year's Australian and French Opens and hit a career-high world ranking of four earlier in the year.

Ferrer won the tournament in 2007 and reached the quarterfinals this year.
