A Korean student is recovering in Christchurch Hospital after being beaten by two men outside his homestay address late on Tuesday night.

The student, 16, was walking from Barrington Mall to his home in Studholm Street when he was attacked after 11pm.

Detective Sergeant Scott Anderson says the offenders beat him and stole his cellphone.

He says the teenager suffered a broken nose, a suspected broken jaw and a possible collapsed lung.

Residents heard sounds of distress and found the student lying on the street just metres from his home.

Detective Sergeant Anderson called it a vicious attack.
