Charges revealed over fatal coolstore fire

10:33 pm on 7 November 2008

Details have emerged of charges laid after a fatal coolstore fire near Hamilton earlier this year.

One firefighter died and seven were badly injured in April when the coolstore at Tamahere exploded just as they were responding to an alarm.

The Department of Labour laid the charges in September, but refused to give details until the case reached court.

A total of nine charges under the Health and Safety in Employment Act have been laid against two companies and four individuals.

At a hearing in the Hamilton District Court on Friday, one company and three of its directors were granted interim name suppression.

Another company, Mobile Refrigeration Specialists, and one of its employees, Warren Cook, can be named.

All of the charges focus on a failure to take practicable steps to ensure the safety of people around the refrigerant Hychill-50, particularly fire fighters.
