No Christmas deadline for trading scheme changes

7:59 pm on 14 November 2008

A senior National Party MP denies reports that changes to the emissions trading scheme will be tabled by Christmas.

National has said it would amend the scheme within its first nine months in office to align it more closely with Australia's and to reduce the financial burden for key industries.

A forest industry newsletter says National will introduce its changes before Christmas.

But MP Nick Smith, who is tipped to become climate change minister, says amendments to the emissions trading scheme are not part of the party's programme for the first 100 days in office.

Dr Smith says the issue has come up in discussions over confidence and supply agreements with both the ACT and Maori parties, but there has been no change to the timetable for any amendments.
