Medvedev arrives in Cuba

10:46 am on 28 November 2008

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev is in Cuba on the last leg of a tour to boost Russia's influence in Latin America.

He was due to meet Cuban President Raul Castro and visit a new Russian-Orthodox cathedral in Havana on Thursday.

Previously he visited Peru, Brazil and Venezuela, where Russian warships are due to carry out joint manoeuvres next week. A number of accords were signed in Venezuela with President Hugo Chavez, including a nuclear energy deal.

It is the first visit by a Russian leader to Cuba since 2000.

Mr Medvedev's visit follows a trip by Chinese President Hu Jintao, who put off some of Cuba's debt payments and agreed to co-operation deals to strengthen ties between the two communist nations.
