Probe into use of substandard timber in houses

7:46 am on 7 December 2008

The Minister Of Building and Construction has called for an investigation into reports surrounding the use of substandard timber in Auckland buildings.

Maurice Williamson says the Department of Building and Housing is working with industry officials to determine the nature and extent of the problem.

Up to 1500 Auckland houses are believed to have been built with the timber.

Mr Williamson says the investigation is confined to the Auckland area and concerns only two companies.

He says the investigation will indicate whether or not there is any need for remedial work.

Waitakere Mayor Bob Harvey says houses built with the faulty timber can be structurally insecure and homeowners should be alarmed.

He says the non-loadbearing timber is not for structural applications and he will seek legal advice on Monday.
