Insurance group supports mandatory sprinklers

The Insurance Brokers Association says it would support a change in the law to make fire sprinklers compulsory, in the wake of a major blaze in Auckland on Monday.

Fire crews continued to work at the Mitre 10 site in Onehunga on Tuesday and confirmed the wreckage of the building is contaminated with asbestos.

The association says not enough businesses are considering the cost of rebuilding if the worst happens - a cost which can far outweigh installing sprinklers.

The camping store gutted by the fire did not have any sprinklers.

Association chief executive Gary Young wants to see that changed in other buildings.
