Ministerial group to assess Fiji election pledge

10:50 am on 11 December 2008

New Zealand's Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully has travelled to Fiji for a meeting of a ministerial contact group seeking to restore democracy in the Pacific nation.

Mr McCully plans to meet his counterparts from Australia, Papua New Guinea, Tuvalu, Tonga and Samoa.

The group will then meet Fiji's interim prime minister Commodore Frank Bainimarama.

Mr McCully said there are indications Commodore Bainimarama has backed away from his administration's commitment to the Pacific Islands Forum to hold elections in March.

He said ministers will assess whether the interim administration will uphold the commitment and will look at whether there is a way forward.
