Search continues for missing man at Bethells Beach

12:05 pm on 14 December 2008

A search will continue on Sunday for a man who was swept from rocks at Bethells Beach, west of Auckland.

Five people were fishing from the rocks when they were swamped by a large wave which pulled two of them into the water at about 11.30am on Saturday.

One of the men was rescued by his friends, but died soon after. The other is still missing.

Police say they were not wearing life jackets.

Northern Surf Lifesaving manager Dean Storey says that was a fatal mistake and life jackets would have significantly increased their prospects of survival.
