State housing maintenance systems 'effective'

4:16 pm on 16 December 2008

The systems for maintaining state houses are effective, according to Auditor-General Kevin Brady.

His office has tabled a report in Parliament containing a performance audit of the systems used to maintain state housing.

In the report, Mr Brady says all Housing New Zealand properties are inspected at least twice a year, and that the systems used to maintain the houses are comprehensive.

But he says those systems do not provide detailed information about the condition of state houses, which has limited the organisation's planning for maintenance.

Mr Brady says Housing New Zealand is already working on ways to fix the problem.
