A Dunedin woman who killed her 22-month-old daughter in May has been sentenced to intensive supervision and community work.

The woman, aged 27, who has permanent name suppression, was initially charged with murder, but later admitted the lesser charge of infanticide.

The High Court in Dunedin heard the mother of five attacked her youngest child because she was crying incessantly.

She banged the toddler's head against a couch several times, choked her and smothered her with a blanket.

As a result of the attack, the girl choked on regurgitated food and died.

Justice Panckhurst said it was another case of awful and fatal abuse of a child.

However, he said the woman could not be held fully responsible because she was severely depressed at the time and the balance of her mind was disturbed.

The judge sentenced her to two years' intensive supervision imposed 100 hours of community work.
